Slanted and enchanted
The bad news is, I'm on-call this long weekend, and up past 1:00 a.m. tonight answering phone calls from DUI arrestees. The good news is, right now KCTS is showing San Francisco public defender / unreal renaissance man Jeff Adachi's movie, The Slanted Screen, and it's really good.

What is this "on-call" thing? Is it a service of the pd's office?
By local practice here, there's a quasi right to talk to a lawyer before you take a breath test. There's one cellphone number that's given out to all law enforcement in the county, to be used by people busted for DUI. Then the cellphone and a big binder (including current law on DUI and implied consent) are handed out to a different lawyer each week.
Luckily the private contract lawyers are in on the rotation, so your number (or mine) only comes up twice a year. This year I got Memorial Day weekend, another year I drew New Year's Eve. And so it goes.
I had no idea! That's great (although you seem to be having bad luck with the rotation).
We have the same deal in Mason County. Fortunately, we have fewer people than King, which means fewer calls on average. Unfortunately, I share the duties with only one other attorney, and we alternate by month. Many a night's sleep has been interrupted.
Hey, Skelly - nice Pavement reference in the title of this DUI-related post. That was on purpose, yes?
