Ludicrous. Criminal defense is the "dark side," the "wrong side"? He's thinking about becoming a PD to "be exempt from indigent family court appointments"? He's talking about applying because "nothing can be worse than what I'm doing now."
He was "never all that comfortable at trials," he doesn't know if he could adequately represent someone whom he knew was guilty, trial is a miserable experience to him, he fears the spotlight, and he's lousy at cross-examination.
This is a no-brainer. If he becomes a PD, he'll prove every critic of PDs correct. Leave defense to the people who believe in it.
