In Lynwood Washington the Public Defender is only there for people who plead guilty! If you want to plead not-guilty, you are on your own. I asked why this was, and was told "we are there for the people who have enough respect to acknowledge their guilt. Besides, we are obligated to be in court for five hours. All not guilty pleas are heard in the afternoon when we have already done our five hours." I can't imagine that this is in the appropriate spirit of "public defender"
